Streszczenie: In contemporary western culture two basic contrary ideas on happiness coexist. The first one looks at the idea of happiness as a very important cultural value for people. It is based on the assumption that every person has the right to be happy. The second position takes a critical point of view and looks at the concept of happiness as an obligation. In line with this stance, every man has to be happy. If she or he is not satisfied with his or her life, society treats this as deviance. In this paper I will consider the dominant ideas on happiness as seen in academic and media discourses in contemporary Poland. Some results of sociological research will be reviewed. Then, the findings of qualitative content analysis of the opinion-forming press articles during 2009-2012 will be presented. Basically, happiness is a very complex phenomenon with multiple meanings. I look at happiness both as an emotion and as the idea of a good life.
