Rezumat: The article is devoted to historical analysis of certain peculiarities of tax systems of empires and ancient civilizations at the stage of their decline, comparing them with the peculiarities of tax systems of foreign countries and Ukraine. The author makes a conclusion on resemblance of these systems that causes concern. The author pays special attention to an excessive level of tax pressure on the taxpayers by the state that, on his opinion, witnesses a decline of western tax systems.
