Rezumat: This article presents the EU’s data protection legislation and guidelines that companies should follow in order to be GDPR compliant and avoid costy fines. Furthermore the article examines how the new data protection regulation affects tourism businesses (hotels, caterers, travel agencies, etc.), which gather, process and work with users’, employees and suppliers personal and sensitive data. There are also mentioned notable cases, where fines were imposed in companies from tourism sector because they violated GDPR. In Greece but also abroad, where tourism is a very profitable financial activity, compliance with the new regulatory framework for personal data law is crucial for all stakeholders as it depends on the proper functioning of each tourism business and could offer an opportunity to build trustful relationships with customers.
