Rezumat: A fast method for lifetime estimation of new polymeric insulations used for underground power cables subjected to an electric field in the presence of water is presented in the paper. Using three fast ageing tests on samples manufactured from the new insulations (low density polyethylene) subjected to higher electric fields and higher frequencies (1...5 kHz), water trees dimensions (maximum length) and breakdown voltage curves versus ageing time were determined. Chosing different values of the end of life criteria, the lifetime lines versus frequency were determined and the insulation lifetimes at nominal frequency used in operation (50 and 60 Hz) were calculated. Finally, the utility of this fast method for underground (medium and high voltage) cables is analyzed.
