THIOPHENE CATALYTIC SYNTHESIS FROM A BY-PRODUCT OF HYDROCARBON FEED DEMERCAPTANIZATION

Rezumat: A method for the catalytic synthesis of thiophene from dialkyl disulfides and C4 hydrocarbons has been developed. This method makes it possible to utilize organic disulfides formed as large tonnage waste during hydrocarbon feed demercaptanization and to produce thiophene, a valuable organic product, from them. Under selected optimal conditions, the method provides a thiophene yield of up to 90 wt %. A new composition of a polyfunctional magnesia, chromia, and alumina catalyst modified with potassium and/or lanthanum oxides has also been developed for the synthesis of thiophene from dialkyl disulfides and C4 hydrocarbons.
