Abstract: The social insurance systems for farmers vary greatly between EU countries. Many EU countries (e.g. Austria, Finland, Poland, etc.) operate separate social insurance systems for farmers, but Lithuania is an exception. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the sustainability and adequacy of the retirement pension system of Lithuanian social insurance in the light of the countries with autonomous systems. Along with the analyses of solutions adopted by chosen countries, the paper provides grounds for determining certain directions for reforms in Lithuanian social insurance system.
