Abstract: The aim of the paper is to present the most popular words and expressions of English identified by various linguistic companies in the past decades. The popularity of words changes with their use – new meanings and contexts are assigned to words; new words arrive to the word stock as a result of the need to express new phenomena. Linguistic societies trying to popularize their work annually create lists of the so-called words of the year for popular and academic discussion.
