Abstract: Environmental challenges have been obtaining momentum for the last 10 years. With them the need to be in a position to track and manage the performance vis-à-vis the environment of the various types of organizations, as well as countries. Environmental reporting is impossible without the existence of environmental accounting since reporting information is in many cases based on accounting data. Hence the valid question what environmental accounting is and what it should be. The aim of the current paper is to review the fundamentals of environmental accounting in light of its importance for environmental reporting and to define the principles and main challenges ahead of the latter in present times.
