Abstract: Possible applications of polymer materials in optical systems and devices are defined mainly by their refractometric and dispersive characteristics. We have examined more than twenty types of optical plastics including basic and some new development materials. Their refractive indices at a number of wavelengths in the visible and near infrared regions have been measured. Received transmission spectra reveal normal dispersion in the considered spectral range. Two mathematical models are applied to calculate the necessary optical parameters decisive in their applications. Comparison of optical and mechanical properties of the investigated plastics and some of the basic optical glasses is carried out. Some dispersion curves are provided to illustrate the possibility of replacing glasses in optical devices by a number of plastics. Refractometric characteristics of polymers at laser emission wavelengths are also presented to demonstrate their usage in coherent optics.
