Abstract: The aim of the paper at identifying how to approach sustainable development in regional development strategies, having as a case study the North-East Region of Romania, and assessing how to implement strategic objectives at regional and rural level. The paper aims to identify new strategic proposals to ensure the sustainable development of rural areas by using a specific, quantifiable and representative system of indicators that will allow, through econometric analyzes, the evaluation of the results and the projection of the evolution of the sustainable development phenomenon. The present paper meets the purpose set by: the conceptual delimitation of sustainable development in the world, European and national context; assessing the extent of the global, European and national sustainable development phenomenon; assessing inter-correlation between regional strategic objectives and sustainable development goals for the North-East Region (2007-2013 and 2014-2020); the analysis of the evolution of the outcome indicators of the regional strategy for the 2007-2013 period highlighting the contribution to ensuring sustainable regional and rural development compared to the evolutionary trend in 2000-2006; projection of the evolution of the outcome indicators of the regional strategy for the period 2007-2020 (with target indicators for 2022) which highlights the contribution to ensuring regional and rural sustainable development compared to the evolutionary trend in the period 2000-2013 and 2007-2013; identifying strategic proposals to ensure sustainable regional and rural development.
