Abstract: The design of a composite laminate is a combinatorial problem with layer thickness and orientation angles design variables. The majority of the commercially avalaible optimization software is for continuous-valued design variables with orientations taking any value between 0o and 90o. The optimization problem with strength constraints were formulated to minimize the laminate weight. In weight minimization problem, orientation variables influence only the strength constrains.
